Wisdom From Proverbs

A Bible-based book of devotions especially for homeschooling moms!

Picture a homeschooling mother who has had very little sleep. She awakens to one child who is out of sorts and grumpy, a mess that wasn’t cleaned up properly by the person responsible, another child who is dawdling with his schoolwork, a baby who is irritable because of illness, and a husband who needs her to help him that morning with something.  Is it possible for such a mother to respond to it all with gentleness, sympathy and kindness?  Yes, it is, but only with God’s help!

"Reading Wisdom from Proverbs was painful. Not because the writing was bad, but because God convicted me with every devotion I read. It is a good kind of pain that changes your life. The devotions are short enough to snatch a quick read while waiting for someone to finish his math facts, during lunch, or during a bathroom trip. This book definately will fit into your busy homeschooling life.”

Dawn King, The Old Schoolhouse Magazine, LLC, November, 2005

Most books written for homeschoolers address the educational side of teaching our children at home, but here is a book that focuses on the spiritual needs of the homeschooling wife and mother.  The book of Proverbs contains a great deal of wisdom that can be directly applied to homeschooling moms. This devotional book explains and applies fifty of these precious verses, and also lists other Bible passages for further study on the topics Proverbs addresses. Wisdom from Proverbs: A Devotional for Homeschooling Moms is a book that could be used in a personal daily quiet time, as a study guide for a homeschool support group, or as a reference book for moms who struggle with the issues that Proverbs addresses.

“I love the way this book explains the verses in Proverbs and then applies it in a real way to homeschooling moms or any mom for that matter. It's a perfect little daily devotional with genuine nuggets of truth that will challenge and encourage moms. I've also found it a perfect gift for moms and especially homeschooling moms.”  -- J. Shin

”This book has been such a blessing to me. Each chapter is just a few pages long, so that I can fit it into my busiest days, but is packed with enough Scripture and thought-provoking content to give me spiritual nourishment. I enjoy Mrs. Coyle's style - she is honest about the struggles that we all face. She asks pointed and sometimes uncomfortable questions, and then points us back to Scripture and our God as our hope for growth and change. I highly recommend this book to ALL moms - not just homeschoolers.” -- J. Douglass

"This is a neat book, covering fifty proverbs. I think that the best thing about it is the short chapters. None of them are too long, which means that even a busy mom can easily fit in five minutes to gain a bit of wisdom to chew on for the day. I managed to read it and digest it even in the midst of a newborn and a new puppy to potty train and packing to sell a home. :)  In each chapter, Barbara gives the particular proverb, a short commentary, and some additional verses for further study.

I admire Barbara for writing about issues that homeschooling mothers can sometimes think we have “conquered.” Sometimes we reach a place in our spiritual lives where no one will dare call us on lesser issues. Perhaps they should, but they won’t, because they assume we have risen above these struggles. I appreciate how Barbara just lays it out there, not assuming either way…but walks the reader through the Proverbs, letting the scriptures speak for themselves.

I thought I was the only one in my house reading this book, until one day my eleven year old son picked it up and said, “This is a pretty good book, isn’t it, Mom?” I asked him if he were indeed reading it, and he sheepishly nodded an affirmative. So, I guess despite the name, it has wisdom for more than mothers.

If you are looking for a devotional book, for either yourself or a mom’s group, this might be what you are looking for. Having completed the book, I think that I would most certainly enjoy sitting down for a cup of good Irish coffee for a visit with Barbara Coyle."  --Holly, Choosing Home Blog
