Reviews We have thoroughly enjoyed the ‘One Stormy Night’ unit study! My boys think it is wonderful, and wanted to do it again when we got to the end! I found it to have a great balance of subjects throughout the two weeks, with science, history, poetry/hymns, copy work, music, art, even maths (which I had NOT been expecting!) When I started I was afraid that I would loose the boys with the old English language, but they listened carefully and later could tell Daddy everything that I had read them! I found this unit study to be very complete. Every question that the boys asked as we went along was dealt with in the appendixes or the activities for that day. The links to the websites made it all run smoothly, while Mommy didn’t have to spend hours finding all the relevant information (Hurray!). This is the first time I have ever done an actual unit study, and I think it is wonderful. I always thought that unit studies were a lot of hard work! Friends who do them have always just had a starting point and then had to search the internet and library to put it all together. This was a joy to use as ALL of the legwork was already done! Barbara has anticipated every question and query and put all the necessary links in place. One thing that I would recommend to anyone doing the course is to get a hold of a copy of the story of ‘Grey friar’s Bobby’ as this is referred to in one of the lessons. We actually happened to own a copy of the story for children which I had picked up at a library sale. This was a wonderful add in for the unit, especially for younger children if you are doing this with mixed ages. Another thing that the boys LOVED was the music on line to all the songs that were included. We had great fun listening to them and then trying (with varying degrees of successJ) to sing along to the music! They were almost disappointed on the days that there was no music. There were also ample opportunities to include art in the course as well. I found it to be excellently written, very complete, with great variation, and also terrific fun! At the end of the day, I know it will be a unit that they will continue to talk about for years to come! As they are currently 7 and 4 ,there is also plenty of scope for us to repeat this at a future stage when they are a little older and can glean even more from the content, and I’m sure we will! Without reservation I can highly recommend this unit to anyone who is interested. I have boys and the ships and sea theme appealed to them, but the main characters are two girls, so there is plenty of content about sewing, shopping, and keeping house in Victorian times to interest the girls too! Plus a cliff hanger at the end of most chapters which keeps the children begging for the next chapter! Most mornings they couldn’t wait to finish breakfast so they could hear what happened next. They even begged to do some on the weekends – now there is enthusiasm!" --A Mom "I
liked learning about all the ships and fog and pretending to be blind
and learning about Braille." "I
really liked the story, and I enjoyed designing my own brooch and
learning about all the history." |
