Learning Activities

 

Day One:

 

1. Read chapter one of One Stormy Night

2. Find England on a map of the world. (A map of the British Isles can be found at: http://mapple1.narod.ru/map-of-england.html )

 • Find the east coast of England on a map (see Appendix One). This story takes place at Ness Point, at Lowestoft. It is the most easterly point of England.   Look for the other places mentioned in this chapter: Yarmouth, Newcastle, Hartlepool, and the River Humber.

 
3. This story takes place in the 1890’s, while Queen Victoria was on the throne. She reigned from 1837-1901, and those years are called the Victorian era.      You can read a short biography of her life and see pictures of her at http://www.victorianstation.com/queen.html

4. Learn about the different kind of ships mentioned in this story.

5. Read about the life-saving work of the coast guard in Victorian times (see Appendix Two).

 • Draw a picture of a rocket and cradle being used to rescue people from a sinking ship.

 • For older students, read Appendix Three, “Battles with the Sea.”
